What changed in the seismic code for new buildings?

What changed in the seismic code for new buildings?

The current seismic code is based on calculating the earthquake hazard of the building’s location on an address-specific basis. This approach aims for the design to match ground conditions more accurately.

Main Changes

  • Use of address-specific earthquake hazard maps
  • Different design classes by building height
  • A greater weight of the soil survey in design
  • Stricter detailing rules

When applied correctly, the new rules markedly improve the seismic performance of buildings. That is why supervising execution on site is as critical as the design itself.
